Autumn Leaves Revisited

The song "Autumn Leaves" has been replaying in my mind lately:

"The autumn leaves, drift past my window,

The autumn leaves of red and gold."

This sounds perfectly lovely.  I love it when the leaves turn color.

"I see your lips, the summer kisses, the sunburned hands I used to hold."

Wait.  .... "I used to hold",......     Why 'used to'?   I'm starting to puzzle over these pretty leaves.

"Since you went away, the days grow long, and soon I'll hear old winter's song."

But, but...  the days become shorter in autumn.  Why are the days growing long?   "I'll hear old winter's song"?  That does it.  This isn't about leaves, is it?

A ghastly thought enters my mind.  Is this about death??
